Our Response to the post.

Thank you for your post.  Sorry for the delay in response.  Petition signatures and on-line responses have been coming in, just keeping up.  You are correct that we all have our right to freedom of speech and to protect and serve, as you mentioned in a second e-mail.  Sorry you thought I would not present your side.  As I said, I am keeping up with the supporters.

The simple arithmetic in your post is minimalistic at best.  The criminal behavior that we know of that you mention here is on the reported cases.  Last year we had one illegal criminal commit 3 crimes.  That was not all the activity for the year.  The police already are stellar in their day to day job duties of speeding and traffic violations.  While driving without a license is not grounds for detainers under 287g drunk driving is, glad you mentioned it in your post.  It is CRIMINAL.  When it arises we will be able to act swiftly.  The Federal Government has given a tool to local law enforcement to act swiftly where it can.  You can not give enough praise to our Mayor and Chief for wanting to do the best.  Come to Suffern Day and see the displays that are out there to support every effort in law enforcement for your protection too.  The real issues of ILLEGAL CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES are real issues of crime.  There are so many people who are NOT willing to sit back and say "NOT OUR PROBLEM, IT IS THE FED'S PROBLEM, IT IS A PROBLEM FOR CONGRESS".  They tried from the top down and we waited for it to work.  It is not working.  We need to do our jobs as citizens and support our country with the tools they are providing us. The Retina ID machine you mention in your post, cost us nothing.  That was well spent drug money obtained in a legal seizure.  This machine is another tool to enhance our police department setting it apart from all others in optimization and pro-active good clean police work.  You don’t think we should have that either?  Suffern is a pleasant place to be because our officers have their finger on the pulse of this era, be greatful.

Suffern must answer questions...

Our response to the article:
At the open March meeting in the Village of Suffern Auditorium, our Mayor Keegan, the Chief of Police along with their Attorney were asked questions regarding costs to the tax payer for this program.  They did not say that the program was going to move forward without cost.  They acknowledge there would be some and did talk about the reimbursements that are given for the use of this program.  They have not misled the people or ever implied that this would be without cost.  The people in the Village know that nothing good comes without cost.

The cost to apprehend, re-apprehend, process, ticket for appearances, wait for appearances, clog the court calendar, remove officers from the streets for appearances all costs money too.  When these criminals are arrested, they are not assumed to be here illegally.  That has to be determined by a series of steps.  Many times the criminal, status unknown, does not appear for their court date.  Then he is re-apprehended for another or more violent crime.  This cycle causes an additional use of our tax dollars again for the repeat illegal criminal felony offender.  The gentleman who wrote this story shows that Suffern is a safe place to live and with this program, will be able to be more efficient in its continued support of your safety.   This program is for Criminal Removal of illegal aliens committing felonies.  The article, although nicely done, gives you information that may cloud the issue.  The fact is the training and re-imbursement offered by the Federal Government works in other areas and will work here as well.

gg new city 6/6/08 -why does a village with a declining crime rate and only 6 major crimes last year need 287 g

Response:  The 6 major crimes mentioned are only the reported crimes.  There are many crimes that are committed that are not reported.  Unfortunately it is among the undocumented community.  287(g) will support the rights of the undocumented who are victimized within.

Dave Gutierrez post 6/6/08

Our Response to the Posting:
Mr. Gutierrez, Thank you for your positive comments on our website.  I have had a chance to look at your site and it is the opposition to the Federal Program 287(g).  Our site, support287g.com, was created to support the Program as it moves forward.  The Program 287(g) was not created for the purpose of racial profiling.  The Federal Government has given local administrations and law enforcement additional means and another avenue to enforce the law.  By continual reference to profiling made by the opposition, it IS creating a fear in the undocumented communities.  Anyone living in the Village of Suffern should not live in fear.  It is for the CRIMINAL Illegal alien.  The illegal CRIMINAL need not remain among the people they have no respect for.

Your site makes reference to 2 towns where the program was not received well or implemented.  There are currently 47 active 287(g) Memorandum of Agreements (MOA’s), nearly 700 officers have been trained and certified through the 287(g) program and there are more than 90 pending requests as of April, 28, 2008.  Sr. Fran Gorsuch of Good Samaritan Hospital met with Chief Osborn; please speak to him for an updated on that meeting.

Your post states “We will continually dissuade individuals that we feel are leveraging this issue incorrectly on the "con" side of 287g”.  Each time a reference is made to profiling, it implies that this is not a welcoming Village, that people are afraid to live here.  You further state: "How we integrate will determine the greatness of our village."  Help to maintain the history of this Village and Town not implied badness.  Using profiling as the opposition to 287(g) is the fear we are speaking of.  This community is aware of many different types of immigrants around us who are producing and creating good things for us here.  Your site is concerned about the Latino community.  This program does NOT target a particular community; it targets CRIMINALS of all origins who are here illegally.

The only people who should be concerned to live here are CRIMINALS who are illegal.  If they commit and are convicted of a felony they will be sent back to their place of origin.  There will receive due process, upon completion of their sentence they will be deported not released back into our community.  It is a wiser use of taxpayer money.

There is no hatred toward Biensy Rosa; there is opposition to her position.  Her contribution to the community as a merchant is welcome.  We cannot censor the blogs especially anonymous comments.  We do not agree with any rude or derogatory comments.  We expect people to use the power of the petition and their right to vote as means to communicate their position.

We thank you again for your positive acceptance to our site and service of education.  We look forward to the acceptance of the Program 287(g) and what it offers to all.

287(g) won't work in Suffern 06/10/08

287(g) protects all law-abiding residents

287(g) protects all law-abiding residents

In response to Shirley Aldebol's letter of June 10, "287(g) program won't work in Suffern," and to all the others who have expressed opposition to the federal 287(g) program, it is you who are encouraging divisiveness. You are either seriously misinformed or are deliberately mischaracterizing the program to instill fear in those who will benefit from the program.

Contrary to the hysteria that the opponents are trying to cause by claiming that the police will target hard-working, law-abiding people, this program will only be used by the police once an undocumented alien is charged with a crime. The greatest number of victims of violence committed by undocumented aliens are other undocumented aliens, because the criminals know their victims are unlikely to go to the police. It is hard to imagine that any law-abiding, compassionate person would prefer to see a violent criminal released back into the community to continue to prey upon innocent victims rather than be deported to their country of origin.
